EVENT DETAILS

THE ‘TRANSFER Sextet’ is a new display format conceived by TRANSFER for Giphy’s ‘Time_Frame’ exhibition celebrating 30 years of the animated GIF. The free-standing six-channel cluster features looped moving image from artists working on the web. The animated GIF is used in studio practice to different ends – sometimes as a means to distribute online, sometimes to extend an existing work, and other times simply to engage with the format itself.

This selection features artists creating GIF works that exist across instances or function as iterations – Rollin Leonard applies his water optics to ‘’ a lively series of forms floating freely online released as part of his solo exhibition, A Bill Miller explores virtual materiality in his ‘Daily Drawings’ series, animated with algorithmic transformations to blur the boundary between real and unreal, Carla Gannis extends ‘Garden of Emoji Delights’ series with looped vignettes that are distributed online and available for collectors as a monumental 4K animation, Faith Holland’s ‘Visual Orgasms’ series is a limited-edition collectable animated GIF series that gets juicier with each instance, Anthony Antonellis captures the urge of getting to the next generation product in his GIF series ‘Wear and Tear’ depicting exaggerations of impatience and destruction that will accelerate the arrival of a replacement, and Lorna Mills presents a new six-channel work ‘Ethereal Imperial’ in which looping animations accumulate until they turn into something intangible, anxious and outrageous.
